The Storm RunnersA purple gloved hand held up a device, which comprised of a shaft with a ball on the end. The owner of that gloved hand, Super Transwoman, smiled, her body cocked in a slightly playful manner. “So, you’ve seen what it can do. Want me to use it on you guys?” “Avdi, yetst bet ir rshus…” Flame Thrower said, her arms crossed. “It can give us the ability to use any fighting style we want?” Multiblades piped up, standing next to her. Super Transwoman held up her index and middle fingers of her empty hand. “Up to two. And if you know any already, it counts that as one of them.” B.A.D. rolled her eyes. “Sounds suspiciously like some sort of video game.” “Astute,” Super Transwoman replied. “This works by tapping in to the energies of various universes which we see as video games.” “Or it’s Ave just trying to create a varied moveset for a future game,” Pinball said. The others in the room tried not to look in hir direction. “Well, I say sign me up!” Mineral said. “Being more skilled is only helpful, right?” “I have to say, my own reservations are kinda outweighed by my curiosity,” Rearranger said. Super Transwoman fiddled with the device. “Just let me know what you want. It’s more inclined to give everyone unique styles, though.” “Video gamey, for sure,” Pinball mused. Arianna had her hands loosely folded, her fingers drumming her arm. “I do not wish to use it. My abilities are already enough.” B.A.D.’s eyes went wider. “Wait, does this mean I might be able to become a real ninja? Y’know, and know ninjitsu?” Xeno floated over, their legs still uncrossing from their meditation. “Maybe you should consider what would work best. Ninjas were assassins. You’ve expressed no desire to kill.” From the sparring mat was heard Transaur’s voice, “I, however, believe that knowledge of the killing arts is important.” Xeno shot Transaur a glare. Multiblades stepped up. “Let’s start doing this, though! Make me a luchadora! ¡Miguela Hernández, reina de las calles y el anillo de la lucha libre!” “This isn’t gonna get me interested in watching wrestling with you, you know,” Flame Thrower said, to which she got the response of an elbow in her side from her girlfriend. Super Transwoman stepped up to Multiblades and pointed the device at her, the ball glowing and shooting a beam of light at the other. “Here you go. It’s recommending I also go with piguaquan for you as well.” “Yeah, sure, go ahead. I don’t know what that is, though.” Super Transwoman shrugged and used the device on Multiblades again. Mineral put his hand to his chin. “I guess I can only get one style, since I know how to wrestle. Um, whatever it feels is best for me.” As Super Transwoman used the device on Mineral, Rearranger said, “I don’t know of many fighting styles. Whatever works best. I’m not picky.” “Okay, but are you sure?” Super Transwoman asked as she pointed the device at Rearranger. Rearranger shrugged. “I’d prefer something culturally relevant, but I don’t know martial arts, really. You know any Wintu or Jewish ones?” “I can think of a Jewish one,” Super Transwoman said as she used the device on Rearranger. B.A.D. scrunched her nose. “I don’t want ninjitsu if it’s a killing thing. Um, there’s a kenpo karate dojo in town I’ve been meaning to check out. And… also a Brazilian jiu jitsu one, so may as well be those.” Super Transwoman looked over at B.A.D. as she used the device on Rearranger again. “If those are from local dojos, wouldn’t you want to learn them on top of what this thing can give you?” Shaking her head, B.A.D. said, “No, that’s probably not going to happen. I mean, time and money and all that. May as well learn it this way.” “Your call,” Super Transwoman sighed, pointing the device at B.A.D. “Would it even work on me, I wonder?” Pinball asked as the device flashed. “I’d like to see what it suggests.” Super Transwoman used the device on B.A.D. again and pointed it at Pinball, looking at its suggestion, and cocked her head. “Hm. Yes, it looks like it’ll work. It’s suggesting something, at least.” A big breath and a sigh came from Flame Thrower. “I’ll do it, too. But let me choose this time, goodness gracious.” The device flashed at Pinball as Super Transwoman looked at Flame Thrower. “I guess that’s fair. What do you prefer?” She flashed the device on Pinball again. “Well, I have dragon heritage. Isn’t there a ‘dragon’ fighting style?” Super Transwoman looked down at the device, fiddling with it. “Um, yeah, looks like the most documented is Lung Ying Quan, or Southern Dragon.” Flame Thrower closed her eyes and cocked her head back before popping her back. “Okay. Yeah, go with that.” “Can do,” Super Transwoman said. She pointed the device at Flame Thrower, and it flashed again. Mineral, meanwhile, had made his way to Pinball. “What’d you get? I got something called bajiquan.” “Um, hou quan and zui quan,” Pinball replied. “They’re… monkey and drunken styles.” Rearranger approached them, from behind Mineral. “I got Shotokan karate and krav maga. It’s… interesting.” Xeno frowned. “Krav maga? Isn’t that a military style?” “It’s Israeli,” Rearranger replied. “That’s what mattered to me. I’m not going to use it lethally.” Transaur clapped her hands together. “I feel it is best to spar, to better acquaint yourself with your new skills. Come and join me on the mat.” A shrill tone began beeping from the computers Super Transwoman had set up. “Nope. No time. Looks like we’ve got an emergency to deal with,” Super Transwoman said. She hurried over to the nearest screen, clacking away on the keyboard. “It looks like we have intruders out there. And from the looks of it, they’re not friendly.” “Hopefully we can talk the villains down, peacefully,” Xeno said. Super Transwoman thumbed toward the door. “Good, because they’re outside.” On the screen could be seen security camera footage of what was amassed just outside the headquarters, where there was a multitude of people, most dressed in a civilian-like style but with spiked shoulder pads as well as wearing knee pads. Some were much more armored, with their shoulders now bladed, blades from the backs of their hands, and spikes on their knee pads. Two, however, were especially differentiated. One of the two was a large muscular woman with a green mohawk and dreads, giant spiked shoulder pads, larger blades from her hands, and exposed skin with circuitry running all along it. The other was the tallest of them all, a large woman with two heads and wearing biker gloves with her large shoulder pads, skull-like knee pads, and form-fitting coat and pants with a body suit underneath. The others gathered behind Super Transwoman to glance at the screen. “That’s Orthrus,” she said, pointing at the large lady. “Those heads are Lilith on her left, and Morgana on her right. Cyborg lady’s a Storm Ogre, the ones in armor are the elite, and the rest are just average Gangers.” She stood up and stepped toward the door. “Let’s move.” Outside, a Ganger looked to another. “This’s gonna be easy stuff. These guys’re not even D-list supers.” A ball of telekinetic force slammed into the Ganger who had just spoke, sending the grunt flying backwards as fellow Gangers had to scramble out of the way to not be bowled over. Super Transwoman stood outside the headquarters, just outside the doorway as her allies followed her out as others stepped through portals to leave the building. In Super Transwoman’s hands was her staff, pointed at the Gangers. “These guys—I’ve been seeing reports of them committing crimes across the world. Don’t go easy on them!” Morgana smirked. “So you’ve seen what we can do. Storm Runners, attack!” The Protectors and their allies ran forward as the average Gangers sprinted towards them. The heroes met the villains’ attacks with their fists and feet, primarily. Flame Thrower stepped into a dragon stance, circling her hands as a Ganger ran towards her, sending the momentum into a double handed shove, a move known as Dragon’s Spite. Twisting to the side, her leg shot into the air, kicking a Ganger in the jaw before immediately swinging back down to hit the same Ganger in the head with her heel, sending him crashing face-first to the asphalt. This taekwondo move was immediately followed by another dragon one as she swung her hand down into a Ganger’s chest in a clawing motion. “I have to say, it’s fun to try this stuff out, not even needing to use our powers on these guys.” Multiblades was in the midst of dropkicking a Ganger. “Oh, definitely. This rocks!” She landed on the ground into a piguaquan stance and smacked into another Ganger with her palms. “I’m sorry, guy, you have a little something on your face!” She rolled forward and flung her legs upward, grabbing a Ganger by the head with her legs, throwing him to the ground face-first. “I think yours is gonna have dirt on it now.” Shoulder-slamming a Ganger, Mineral quipped, “Oh, come on, guys, can’t you shoulder the task of fighting us?” Another Ganger charged him, to which he ducked low and threw him over himself in a suplex. “Can you grapple with the responsibility?” He grabbed an incoming punch from another, getting the Ganger into a headlock, cocking his fist back to punch the villain. “You know, you can just give up.” The Ganger growled and clawed at Mineral, to which the hero sighed and punched the villain in the face. “I’m curious what they want, though,” Rearranger said, as he attacked a Ganger with a downward hook punch. He kicked away an incoming punch. “I mean, are they just trying to take us out?” He caught another punch, elbowing the Ganger in the face, as he kicked a different one. “Arianna, can you read their minds?” “Thoughts from the individuals seem to imply they want to eliminate us as a threat.” Arianna kicked a Ganger in the head. B.A.D. kneed a Ganger in the stomach while elbowing another. “So, they were scared of us?” Arianna punched a Ganger while kicking another coming at her from the other side. “Only insofar as they know so little about us.” B.A.D. dropped onto a fallen Ganger with her elbow. “…Because none of us are from this world?” In what looked like she was striking a pose, Arianna poked a Ganger in the eyes. “Yes. That is correct.” Getting up, B.A.D. uppercutted another Ganger. “Ow. We should confront their boss and show what we can do, then.” Pinball swayed away from a Ganger punch. “Maybe we’ll do it soon. Story’s focused on me now.” Zhe fell to the ground, kicking a Ganger as zhe did so. “These stories seem to like to give each of us our own little showcase.” Pinball somersaulted into another Ganger. “And our four friends rarely get the same courtesy.” Super Transwoman smacked some Gangers with her staff. “Well, screw that! I’m taking on the big ones!” She shot forward, flying at Orthrus. “Let’s see them face my telekinetic fury!” Orthrus reached out a hand and caught Super Transwoman by the face. Then, the hero’s body flailing like a ragdoll as she did so, Orthrus swung Super Transwoman up and then slammed her into the asphalt, head first. Xeno whipped their head around to see this, and shot toward their friend. “No! I need to get her out of here!” Morgana took a deep breath and then opened her mouth. Out came a scream, one which had such force that Xeno was stopped in midair and then was launched backward. Lilith smirked, saying, “Not gonna happen.” She snapped her fingers. “Let’s call in our elite. The grunts were not effective.” The elite Gangers stepped forward. Flame Thrower reached down to her side at her belt and grabbed her sword, which as always seemed to ge stored in some sort of pocket of hammerspace or the like right there. “I think I’m going to need this now.” Mineral put his hand into his other hand’s glove, pulling out his own weapon, a macuahuitl. “Sharp thinking. I’ve got mine ready, too. Can’t believe I haven’t used this baby yet.” In Multiblades’s hands began to form long rocky shards which she could use as swords. “We really need to get Rearranger and Pinball some weapons, to even us out.” As if in response, there was a crack as an object smacked into the head of one of the elite Gangers which had gotten close. The others looked to where it came from to see Rearranger brandishing a knobbed club. “Az s vos ir trakhtn. Don’t assume I don’t have one.” One of the elite swiped at Flame Thrower, which she parried with her sword. “Is that the one that you got at that powow, like, two decades ago?” Rearranger smacked another Ganger with his club. “Yeah. Poꞏ ʔuniqaꞏda hiʔel.” “I would join your endeavors likewise and draw my own blades, but my opponents would surely be unable to survive them,” Arianna said, still engaged with multiple regular Gangers. “I know you are unwilling to have such happen, and do not wish to make you uncomfortable.” “Or it might be that you can’t wipe all their minds this time,” Pinball mumbled. Zhe looked at the group fighting with weapons, with Transaur using hers and Bow Horn sitting back and letting arrows fly into Gangers’ non-vital areas. “That’s just great. I still don’t have a weapon.” Sweeping a Ganger away from hirself, which gave hir a clear view of Orthrus and the Storm Ogre, Pinball mused, “But maybe I do…” Zhe put out hir hand, which began to glow. “Guys! Heads up!” A portal formed under Orthrus, who looked down as she started to fall. “Oh, son of a…” Morgana said. The other side of the portal had opened high above the action. Orthrus came out that end, Morgana still speaking: “…biiiiiiiii…” Orthrus positioned herself during this so that Morgana’s head was pointed toward the ground, and her voice heightened to that of a sonic scream. “…IIIIIIIIIII…” The Protectors had scrambled away, but the elite Gangers weren’t so lucky, getting flattened by the scream, all while Orthrus’s descent was slowed by Morgana’s scream, until she touched onto the ground rather smoothly. “…itch!” As Morgana caught her breath, Lilith scowled. “Annoying. Storm Ogre, attack them.” The Storm Ogre grunted and lifted her arms behind her head. She swung them down, smashing the ground, which caused everywhere around to shake. While Mineral was able to get his rocky covering up in time, the others except Storm Ogre and Orthrus herself were knocked off their feet. Mineral smirked at the Storm Ogre, his body now covered completely. “Oh, don’t get so shaken up, Fiona.” He ran at the Storm Ogre. “I can take you down, easy!” As Mineral ran off, the other heroes pushed themselves up. “It’ll take more than that to take us out,” Flame Thrower said. “Good. I’d hate for this to be boring,” Lilith replied. She put out her hand and the glass on the windows of the headquarters began to rattle. The rattling became more violent before the crashing sound as they shattered, millions of shards flying into the air, which the heroes just barely dodged as they flew toward Orthrus, circling around the villain in tendrils. “You can’t handle us.” “We’ll make your death painful,” Morgana said. Meanwhile, back with Mineral and the Storm Ogre, the latter was in a boxing stance as Mineral faced off against her. “Betcha can’t break my armor, lummox!” he said. She growled and punched at him, which Mineral deflected, and stepped in to her, slamming his shoulder into her. “You fell for that, hook, line, and sinker!” The Storm Ogre took a step back. “You got any layers to ya, or did Dreamworks lie to me?” Storm Ogre growled and charged at Mineral, arm outstretched. Back with the Orthrus fight, the heroes were doing their best just to not get pelted with glass. Flame Thrower gritted her teeth as she tried to maintain a shield of fire. “Guys, any plans?” “I may assist if my wellbeing is protected,” Arianna posited. “Anybody trustworthy?” Flame Thrower asked. “Oh come on, get over it and protect Ari!” B.A.D. said. She put out her hand and Orthrus flew backward. Transaur rushed in to attack. “The enemy is down! Take the initiative!” There was the sound of a massive impact and Transaur came flying backwards, smacking into a wall of the headquarters. Over in a more forgotten area of the fight, Xeno, knelt down at Super Transwoman’s side. “I need to heal you quickly.” Super Transwoman pushed herself up. “Later. They, ow, need our help.” She indicated to the fights, where the regular Gangers could be seen getting back to their feet. The elite were luckily down for the count, it seemed. “I’m sure you used telekinesis to dampen the fall, but you—” Super Transwoman tightened her grip on her staff. “I’ll be fine. For now. They must pay.” “If you jump back in, you might be fatally hurt. Is there anyone we can call for help?” “Now that you mention it…” Over against the Storm Ogre, Mineral was being slammed into the ground. “Okay, maybe I might want some help here, guys!” From a distance away, a spike flew into the fray, striking the Storm Ogre in the chest. It bounced right off. “No offense, Bow Horn, but maybe from somebody else?” Rearranger dodged away from the Orthrus fight and flew toward his boyfriend. “I gotcha, gelibte!” The space around his hand began to warp and he used that and his momentum to punch the Storm Ogre in the chest. Dropping Mineral, the Storm Ogre tumbled a ways backwards. Rearranger put out his hand to Mineral. “Everything okay?” Mineral took his hand. “Never better,” he groaned. Back with Orthrus, Pinball was coming out of a portal from above the villain, coming down into a double kick. “Just what’s Arianna doing?” A Ganger rushed at Arianna as she made hand gestures, barely looking at the villain to kick him in the face, her hand movements unbroken, hands starting to glow. “Their minds are difficult to affect. However, if I can use my magic, it will be simpler.” Keeping her gestures going, Arianna spun to kick another Ganger. “However, if my hand gestures are broken, a spell is lost. Therefore, I need these peons to cease their attack!” In a fluid motions from her other ones, Arianna put her hand out, palm toward Orthrus. “That should help.” The ground underneath Orthrus erupted in a beam of energy, completely engulfing her. The beam faded away soon after and the villain still stood there, seemingly no worse for the wear. “Is that all you got?” Morgana asked. Arianna cocked her head and then closed her eyes with frustration. “Oh, I understand. My allies, they absorb energy! I fear I did not affect things correctly.” Morgana screamed again as Lilith spoke up, “That’s right. Thank you for that. It makes us stronger.” Ears bleeding, Flame Thrower gritted her teeth. “ʔut harmawirabiꞏda maꞏlemhara.” She put out her hands. “Bite laz das arbetn.” Morgana’s screaming died down and she turned her head to look at Lilith. “Um, do you feel cold?” Lilith lifted her arm to see icicles forming on it. “Ohh, clever.” Lilith and Morgana eyed Flame Thrower, who was forming a ball of fire from the heat she was drawing away from Orthrus. The villain bounded toward Flame Thrower, who threw the ball of fire away just before she was punched in the face. “¡Esa es mi novia, demonias!” Multiblades yelled, slashing Orthrus in the back. Rearranger flew up, Mineral running up behind him. “Anything we can do?” Both Lilith and Morgana were seething and cried out in unison, “You will all die!” Mineral slammed his hand on the ground, his covering seeping onto the asphalt itself, moving toward Orthrus. “Yeah, I’ll take a rain check on that. Calmarse.” The rocky substance was already halfway up Orthrus’s body when Lilith looked down. “What is this?” “Some sort of covering?” Morgana asked. The substance soon had covered the villain’s entire body, already starting to rattle. Rearranger frowned. “Careful. That didn’t hold Dispawn. Or that circus guy.” A crash sounded as the covering shattered off of Orthrus’s body. “I should’ve done two coats,” Mineral said. “That was faster than ever.” Morgana took a deep breath, only for B.A.D. to react by shoving her arms out. Telekinetic force slammed into Orthrus’s stomach, causing Morgana to let out all of her air in a gasp. Rearranger whipped his head to the side to look at Mineral. “Cover her mouth!” “Gotcha,” Mineral said, putting his hand over Morgana’s mouth. His covering crept around and encased her mouth. He pulled his hand away, and Morgana started clawing at the covering. “What did you do?” Lilith yelled. “She’ll suffocate!” Mineral dodged a punch from Lilith. “I didn’t cover her nose. She’s fine.” Rearranger stepped up and punched Orthrus in the arm with a space-warped fist. Orthrus grabbed that arm, which was now limp. “Oh, pressure points, then? Or something like that? Clever.” Mineral put his hand to the ground again as the glass began to fly around once more. It flew towards Rearranger and Mineral, only for Pinball to put out hir hand and open a portal, taking the glass out of the action. The exit point of the portal was miles away, at the local dump, which Pinball considered likely out of her range. Unimpeded, Mineral crept the covering up Orthrus’s body again, this time it covering a second time after the first. Flame Thrower pushed herself off the ground and started taking more heat away from the villain as well. Lilith’s teeth were chattering by now. She looked at Morgana, who was already losing consciousness. “M-Morgana?” She turned her head to look at the heroes. “Y-y-you. I’ll re-re-rememb-b-b-ber all-all-all of y-y-y-you!” Arianna put her fingers to her temple and Lilith fell unconscious. “You probably shall, for I have vowed to not affect memories again. However, I shall endeavor to ensure you remember to fear us as well.” Flame Thrower dissipated her ball of fire and looked around. There were still some Gangers conscious, hanging back, and looking from the heroes to Orthrus. “Um, we’re not done, you guys.” There was a rumbling and screeching as a canopied truck rolled in, several men in flak armor coming out the back, guns drawn. The soldiers glanced at Orthrus before advancing on the conscious Gangers. Thumps and rattles sounded as they shot tear gas canisters at the remaining combatants. “What’s going on?” B.A.D. asked. Super Transwoman limped in, helped to remain standing by Xeno. “I called in reinforcements. Say hello to the Legions PMC.” “Grargh!” came a cry. Everyone looked to see the Storm Ogre rushing in, having obviously recovered from the previous punch. Rearranger balled his hand into a fist, space warping around it again, and swung it down at the Storm Ogre’s head just as she was about to hit him. The cyborg was knocked to the ground, the asphalt breaking away underneath her. Everyone around took up defensive stances, but eased up after a minute when she didn’t get up. One of the more armored soldiers whistled. “You took down a Storm Ogre with one hit? You may not have needed us.” “To be fair, it was two hits,” Rearranger said. “I noticed the tech before and that punch had electromagnetic properties.” “But who are these deus ex machinas?” Pinball asked. The soldier indicated the villains scattered about. “Um, I think we should get the criminals off the field before chit-chat.” Armored vehicles came and the villains were loaded onto them. It took some doing to move Orthrus, but they managed it after Mineral had reluctantly removed the covering and the telekinetics helped move her. She barely was able to fit a more reinforced and larger vehicle, but they had managed. It was soon that the heroes were gathered, everyone refreshed due to Xeno’s healing, and talking to one of the lead soldiers. “We’re a squad who’s been mobilized to meet the threat of the Storm Runners,” the soldier said. “I remember reading about them in articles about the villains, which made me remember to call them,” Super Transwoman added. The soldier nodded. “Granted, we had no idea they’d be in Redding, or we would have joined you sooner.” Flame Thrower smirked. “I mean, who the heck even remembers Redding exists, am I right?” “No, I mean, this place has no valuable targets. Little money, no political power, no iconic landmarks. It would have made more sense for them to target the dam a city to the North.” “I mean, there’s the Sundial Bridge, Redding has that,” B.A.D. posited. “Esa cosa es más fea que el pecado, nos habrían hecho un favor destruyéndola,” Mineral mumbled. Multiblades let out a giggle at that and elbowed her brother in the side. No translation was asked for by everyone else, however. “They said they were here to eliminate us as a threat,” Rearranger said. The soldier nodded. “That could be true. After all, most of you are enigmas in our own databases, even.” Super Transwoman perked up at this. “Most? Not all?” “He means they know the identities of the four of you, but not the Protectors.” Arianna made it sound like it should be the most obvious thing ever. The soldier put up his hands defensively. “Hey, I just know that if you’re active in public life, there’s a file on you. But your ‘Protectors’ team has no presence outside of costume.” Flame Thrower grabbed the back of her neck. “Oh jeez, I hope the government doesn’t have a file on us in our world.” “From another universe? I’ll mention that to my superiors,” the soldier said. “And maybe stop trying to figure out our identities?” Multiblades posited. “I can’t promise that. They may not believe your claim.” “I understand, but Multiblades means that we might have counterparts in this universe, who probably don’t have powers, and we don’t want them to be harassed,” Pinball said. Arianna tapped her temple. “I can make him convince his organization.” “Ari, don’t you dare!” B.A.D. shot. “Hey, don’t get on me about things,” the soldier said. “I’m too low on the food chain. But we need to leave. Good day.” He headed to oversee his men again. “I jest, my dear,” Arianna said to B.A.D. “I wish to remain true to my word.” “Sure you do,” Flame Thrower mumbled as she watched the two embrace. The soldiers finished clearing the area and the heroes watched them drive off. They sat in silence for a bit. “So,” Super Transwoman spoke up, “who wants to do some of that sparring we were talking about?” Elsewhere, in an alley, blood was splattered on the walls, as the mangled bodies of several Gangers were strewn around. Their attacker sat in the shadows as he ripped his hands into their flesh, pulling out the bloody meat and bringing it to his face to take a bite. “Such savagery,” a voice said, causing the eating one to turn his head to look. There was approaching a man who consisted almost entirely of a giant head, save for the arms and legs sprouting from it. With him was a woman whose body was made entirely of stone. “What did these fine gentlemen ever do to you?” The vicious one stood up and turned to face the two, his body still in shadow. “They attacked and I was hungry.” His eyes shone in the darkness, glaring at the giant head. “If you wish to do likewise, I am not fatigued. As well, I have friends who will aid at my call.” “Oh, I’m not going to try to hurt you,” the giant headed man said. “But, you see, you did cause me some problems. I had agreed to meet these men here, to discuss an alliance with them. You’ve made that difficult.” The vicious one snorted. “I do not care about your machinations. My allegiance is only to those who would destroy all which humans stand for, to see them scream in agony as I bury their entire species across universes.” “Oh? I assume you aren’t human, then? It’s hard to tell in the shadows there. But perhaps we might be of help. My name is the Head, and with me is my associate, Heather.” The rock lady waved. “Sup?” Stepping forward, the vicious one’s foot came into the light, green and scaly with sharp claws for nails. “Do you think I can just trust any who offer their support?” His face came into the light, revealing a green and scaly snout, his sharp teeth gleaming in the light as his mouth and nose began to emanate smoke. “Those who approach others, looking for partnership, they think themselves the dominant. I answer to no being. I command, or I kill!” “Oh, you’re different now, aren’t you?” a voice cooed. Shimmering into view was a reddish snake-like creature. “What made you so angry, so distrustful?” “D’Vlish,” the vicious one scoffed. “I know not how you came upon this world, as well, but our alliance has long since ceased relevance, and you no longer seem to possess your ability to coax my compliance.” “Of course,” D’Vlish said. “But we’re here, now. What happened to your disguise? Your unaware allies?” The green one looked away. “Found out your true nature, did they? How shameful for you, that you couldn’t kill them after.” The green one grabbed D’Vlish by the throat. “Shame, demon? I am nobody’s shame!” “Oh, touched a nerve,” D’Vlish clucked. “The great Dispawn has a sore spot?” “So, we’ve all been introduced,” the Head said. “This is such fun, meeting new, angry people.” Dispawn snarled at the Head. “I want nothing to do with you! Humans, so arrogant, thinking themselves superior!” “Oh, so I guess you think dragons are so much cooler, then?” Heather spoke up. Dispawn let go of D’Vlish and slammed his fist into Heather, sending her flying. He looked at his now bloody knuckles. “Dragons are likewise irredeemable.” “Ah, I see,” the Head said. “Mama and Papa didn’t love you, so you take it out on both of them.” “Do not dare to presume to understand me!” Dispawn growled, his mouth beginning to brim with fire. The Head put up his hands. “Ah, okay, so you are quite resolute in your will to not align with me. It’s amazing you have a team at all. Unless you’re not telling them the whole story.” He turned to D’Vlish. “If you’re willing to hear me out, miss, I’m sure you can find me.” He floated up and back down the alley, only stopping to lift up Heather’s unconscious body with his telekinesis and keep going. “Why the anger at me? I’m not human, or dragon,” D’Vlish said. “He rankled me,” Dispawn replied. “I am also not convinced you are of the origin you claim.” “The ground you’re treading is dangerous, Dispawn. I am a demon. Don’t make me test that assertion.” “I have been called a demon, as well, when I know my origins to be terrestrial. As well, I know abilities are not indicative of one’s place of origin.” “Your point is understandable. So, are we to part now with enmity, or should we remain on friendlier terms?” “As of this moment, I do not wish to kill you.” “I’ll take it. So, do you want to fly away, all dramatic-like?” Dispawn scoffed. “If I leave, I do not wish you to follow.” “Like you could stop me,” D’Vlish said. “But oh well, I’ll leave you to your dinner, then.” She faded from sight again. Dispawn looked around the alleyway before grunting and picking up the corpse he’d been eating, biting into it once again.
